The Wood's Wood

Indianapolis, Indiana

Announcement    The Wood's Wood, Having fun with the wood I find in the woods (it is not drift wood).
Recovered Pine knots from out in the woods and un-sculpted into a statuettes.
TO ME: The Pine knot is the intersection of the tree branch into the tree and threw the growth rings connecting to the center tube. (I'm not a biologist)
TO ME: This is the most 'alive' area of the tree as the energy from the leaves comes down the branch into the tree and nutrients and such go up to grow the branch. This part of the tree seems to be the last thing to decay in the woods. If I find a tree that is decaying in just the right way which is very rare, I can retrieve the knot. There are many Pines and many Pine knots out in the woods but retrieving one that has good strong growth ring lines and will take wax well is the hard part.
SO: You are mainly looking at the growth rings from the inside of Pine trees. I dry, clean, detail, wax, and hopefully mount them in an artist way. I try to give them either 'motion' or 'presence' in their displaying.
Each piece is actually built by Nature and is absolutely one of a kind. I like to think of it as a captured moment in time as the decay is stopped by drying it.
Only Conifers seem to decay like this leaving these little parts of themselves out in the woods.
I have learned in the last year it is a little hard for others to understand exactly what is going on, especially only in pictures. I hope some will find them at least ascetically pleasing with a little bonus that they are the almost only remaining part of a Pine tree that died from a disease five, ten, maybe fifteen years ago.

Prices based on the quality of the grooves, two-sideness, the way it took the oil, and overall uniqueness among the others. Not necessarily the size.

Nature as Art.... we are kinda recycling the wood?
